The Blues’ 1B goaltender has had a new mask designed by Jason Livery of HeadStrong Grafix, and if you’re a fan of Casey Jones, this is the mask for you.

I freely admit that I was a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a kid. They were unique, and fun, and very much the perfect toy for a child of the 80s and 90s. Also, Casey Jones was pretty bad ass, and his toy came with a golf bag full of clubs and hockey sticks. He even wore an old-time goalie mask. I was fascinated by hockey when I was a kid, so Jones became one of my favorite characters.

I remember reading somewhere that Brian Elliott isn’t a Ninja Turtles fan; he just thinks that Casey Jones is a pretty bad-ass thing to put on a mask. I can’t disagree with him. This season’s mask (for whenever it starts — God willing it’ll be January 19th) has really put Casey into the limelight, and I think is one of my new favorites. Witness the excellence that Jason Livery at Belleville’s HeadStrong Grafix has created (Images via InGoal Magazine):

via ingoal.ingoalmagazine.netdna-cdn.com

Honestly, if the left side of that mask doesn’t strike fear into the hearts of someone, I don’t know what will. That’s Casey Jones on steroids. HeadStrong has a full gallery of Elliott masks at their website.

While the NHL and NHLPA were preparing to meet and review the League’s latest proposal made Friday, the finishing touches were being put on Elliott’s new lid for a season no one is yet sure will happen.

The mask, painted for Elliott once again byHeadStrong Grafx, includes his now traditional Casey Jones themes from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame.

This time, however, the goalie-mask wearing, hockey-stick toting, cartoon character is breaking free of chains – and the padlock over his right shoulder – on the right side of Elliott’s mask, a nod to the lockout that has cost half a season so far.

On the other side, Elliott pays tribute to St. Louis and the Blues, with the Gateway Arch stretching overtop of the team’s musical note logo. The latter also features a haunting image of Casey Jones’ face within the logo itself.

The images of new mask below come courtesy of artist Jason Livery from HeadStrong Grafx, all rights reserved. Be sure to check out more of his work on the HeadStrong Grafx website, on Twitter, on FaceBook, and here at InGoal.

The InGoal gallery includes the last Casey Jones mask for Elliott (and a very interesting backplate), Elliott’s one-off mask for his first All-Star Game appearance, with a backplate that was used to collect autographs, and Jaroslav Halak’s stirring tribute to Pavol Demitra.

In the meantime, enjoy these detailed shots of Elliott’s new mask – and Casey Jones trying to end the NHL lockout:

Chris Whitley may be back playing in the Central Hockey League, but there is nothing minor league about his new A-Team mask from HeadStrongGrafx.

In truth, InGoal would probably applaud any attempt to work the 1980s television show onto a mask, but Whitley went beyond the simple and somewhat obvious alphabetical tie in between the A-Team and his team, the Allen Americans.

In addition to Mr. T’s van flying through an explosion on the right side of the mask – ”which typically happened every show,” Whitley noted, “something was always getting blown up” – the 29-year-old goaltender actually had the faces of four Allen players painted onto the bodies of the show’s four main characters, casting himself as Hannibal.

“I asked guys I thought might fit the role as the characters,” said Whitley, who played two seasons for the Americans before spending last year in Dundee, Scotland of the EIHL. “I asked Darryl Bootland to be Mr. T because he is a tough guy. Nino Musitell is Faceman because he is funny. Jarrett Lukin is Murdoch because I think he is crazy and I gave myself the role of Hannibal as the guy who is gonna lead us from the back end. I wanted to show the respect I have for these guys and the whole team. I would have loved to put everyone on it, but I designed the mask right after I signed and wanted it before the season started.”

Whitley, who played one game in the AHL two seasons ago, had previously used Batman themes on his helmets, but wanted something different for his return to Allen. So he had HeadStrongGrafx wrap the entire thing in an American flag, with the team logo on the forehead and the A-Team theme everywhere else, right down to the bullet holes throughout.

“I had this idea for a while,” Whitley said. “I was a fan of the A-Team TV show as well as the [2010] movie and thought it would be a goood fit with our team name. The mask actually has the American flag wrapped around it and the front has our logo with bullet holes again signifying the armed battles the A-Team usually goes through.”

After publishing the Audioslave tribute maskby David Leroux this week we couldn’t help notice this standout helmet done by our friends at Headstrong Grafx – a Black Sabbath tribute – when it showed up on their Facebook site recently.

This mask won’t be seeing the TV lights of an NHL rink, but it’s being worn by someone with a pro’s appetite for new gear, a recreational goaltender who confessed to InGoal, “some women spend their money on purses and shoes…I spend mine on cool custom painted goalie masks.”

Liz Conner, who plays in Massachusetts, had some specific requests for Headstrong but also knew when to leave the design work to the pros,”I asked specifically for the picture of Henry (the flying devil logo) on the forehead, based on alternative CD art for ‘The Devil You Know’ and the band name on the chin. My only other stipulation was that the mask not focus 100% on Ozzy. Tony Iommi’s riffs are what drew me to Sabbath, and I wanted to make sure he was included somewhere. The rest was all Headstrong.”

All right Sabbath fans, what do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Halak honors Slovakian teammate Demitra with new mask

by KEVIN WOODLEY

While thousands attended a memorial service in Slovakia Thursday to honor Pavol Demitra, Jaroslav Halak was preparing to open the NHL season with a tribute of his own back in St. Louis.

The Blues’ No.1 will honour his former Slovakian teammate on the back of his mask after Demitra was among 37 players, coaches and staff of Russia’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey club to die last week when the team flight crashed en route to the first game of the Kontinental Hockey League season.

InGoal Magazine has the first look the emotion-filled backplate, which depicts Demitra with arms raised after scoring for Slovakia during the 2010 Olympics, which he led in scoring. The images come courtesy of artist Jason Livery from Head Strong Grafx, who painted the backplate and will present it to Halak Sunday:

St. Louis goalie Jaroslav Halak is honouring Slovakian teammate Pavol Demitra with this mask backplate painted by Head Strong Grafx

Halak isn’t the first goalie to honor lost teammates as hockey’s horrific summer ends – Minnesota’s Josh Harding paid homage to ex-teammates Demitra, Derek Boogaard and Rick Rypien (and his grandmother) on his new Wild mask.
